Clean Developmement Mechanism (CDM)

What is CDM?

CDM was established by the Kyoto Protocol (1997) and has two main objectives: to help developed countries meet a part of their emission reduction targets under the Kyoto Protocol offshore and to assist developing countries hosting the project in achieving sustainable development. CDM projects generate tradable certified emission reduction (CER) credits, which can be sold on international carbon markets. A CER is a unit issued for emission reductions from CDM project activities or PoAs in accordance with the CDM rules and requirements, which is equal to one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent, calculated using global warming potentials. Besides the global environmental integrity, CDM projects also provide benefits such as new investment in developing countries, transfer of climate friendly technologies, the improvement of livelihoods and skills, job creation and increased economic activity.

Project Cycle: A CDM project goes through 7 main stages

• The Minister of Water & Environment is Uganda's Designated National Authority (DNA). The Climate Change Unit (CCU) is the secretariat to the DNA. Applications by potential CDM projects are submitted to the CCU.
